Too often IT solutions use cookie cutter approaches. This one-size-fits-all may not to be appropriate for your needs. Using off-the-shelf products are generally the most cost effective approach, however, these may need a little tweaking to really meet your business needs.

There may be cost effective, off-the-shelf Open Source  software solutions that meet your needs.

Open Source Software

Open source software is often ignored by small business because it is less well known than the standard commercial software products. But it is free of charge and of extremely high quality and offers superb functionality.

Products that you may be using include routers, smart home devices and Android smartphones are built on an open-source operating system such as Linux. Also Linux essentially runs the internet in our online world.

Due to the collaborative nature of open source projects, there are many eyes looking over the source code, bugs and security probelms. This increases the likelihood of probelms being spotted and fixed quickly.

Given the audience of open source programmers, there is also an incentive to write elegant code that can be easily worked with by others. Open source encourages development that addresses the needs of users, rather that chasing a revenue stream for the product owners.

Anyone can contribute to the software base and then share their changes back to the original project. This means that everyone benefits from any problems solved. (This is a paraphrased summary from the Alan Turing Institute regarding the benefits of open source software)
